MC2: Media Competencies for Teachers

Aside from reading, writing and numeracy media competence becomes more and more important. It is seen and designated as a key competence in knowledge based societies. Knowing how to use media in an appropriate and profitable way will have a massive impact on an individual, social, and vocational level. People who are not familiar in the use of new media are threatened by social exclusion, will suffer consequences in the world of work and will be handicapped to gather and evaluate information in todays information and communication technology based societies. Therefore it is indispensable to have general knowledge about media and its various forms and to develop a critical reception beyond a shortened consumption oriented behaviour. In this context schools have the responsibility to sensitise and prepare students for tomorrow’s challenges and provide them with the skills to use media in a self-directed, critical, and reflective way. Apart from the focus on the learner the perspective of the teacher is very important, too: What kind of media are used by learners in what extend? How can the use of media support individualized and collaborative learning? What possibilities of purposeful and pedagogical integration of media do I have, for example as an initial point for learning, media as a learning tool or instrument to fix and work on learning results and outcomes? How can I face and master the challenge that students might have more media competencies than the teacher?

MC3: Game-Based Learning – A hands-on approach for motivating learners

The world of games enchants millions of young and senior citizens around the globe. Games give them the opportunity to immerse into a virtual fantastic world and experience joy, reinforcement, reward, connection with others, competition and progress. When we are actively engaged in a game, our minds are experiencing the pleasure of stepping outside our ordinary lives. Teachers often have to deal with low motivation of students and minimal engagement. Game-based learning (GBL) can help you bridge the gap between personal interest and learning contents. GBL uses the natural interest in games and creates learning applications that draw people into virtual environments that feel familiar and relevant. Within such an environment, they work towards a goal, choosing actions and experiencing the consequences along the way. They make mistakes in a risk-free setting, and through experimentation and become active learners. This course will introduce you to the world of game-based learning, focussing on the opportunities to use GBL in school, as well as experiencing GBL yourself in a practical way. In addition you will get advice, techniques, and tools that apply the principles of game design to the learning process. No technical knowledge is required for this course.
